MA French Studies Handbook: Timeline

Please note the suggested deadlines below. There are two options: one for graduating in one year, the other for graduating in two years. The deadlines are not fixed, you can complete the steps earlier than these. The earlier you get the Prospectus done, the easier it will be to complete your thesis.

Steps to Complete Prospectus
1 year program
2 year program
Step 1
Student and a faculty member discuss an idea
Middle of 1st semester End of 1st year
Step 2
Student does brief literature search
2-3 weeks approx.
2-3 weeks approx.
Step 3
Student proposes a research title
End of 1st semester
1st semester, 2nd year
Step 4
Advisory committee is formed with two readers who can contribute to student's research. Notify the secretary of your advisory committee so it can be recorded on computer.
End of 1st semester
1st semester, 2nd year
Step 5
Research on literature continued
Beginning of 2nd semester
1st semester, 2nd year
Step 6
Prospectus formalized working closely with committee members.
Middle of 2nd semester
Middle of 1st semester, 2nd year
Step 7
Prospectus completed, signed and accepted by Graduate Coordinator
Middle of 2nd semester
End of 1st semester, 2nd year
Step 8
Research, readings continue working with Advisory committee to begin thesis. Sign up for at least 2 credit hours of French 699R, Thesis.
End of 2nd semester; 3 hrs of thesis for Spring term and 3 hrs of thesis for Summer, or 4 hrs of thesis for Spring and 2 hrs of thesis for Summer (You will need to be enrolled in at least 2 cr hrs the term you graduate) 2nd semester, 2nd year (Remember you need to be enrolled in 2 cr hrs the term/semester you graduate)
