Bachelors of French Teaching

Statement of Purpose

Students who successfully complete the requirements for a BA in French Teaching will be able to plan, design, deliver, and evaluate effective instruction in French language and cultures appropriate to the needs and abilities of learners in secondary public schools. Upon completion of the French Teacher Education Program, teacher candidates will be able to meet the needs of secondary students through competencies related to the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) and the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Program Standards for the Preparation of Foreign Language Teachers.


Curricular Structure

The preparation of candidates to teach French in secondary public schools is the joint responsibility of the faculty in the Department of French and Italian and the David O. McKay School of Education. The teaching major program requires 54 credit hours of course work as laid out below.

Core Required French Courses

18 credit hours as follows:

  • French 321 Advanced Grammar (3 hours)
  • French 322 Advanced Composition (3 hours)
  • French 340 Introduction to Literary Analysis (3 hours)
  • French 377 Introduction to French Language Teaching (3 hours)
  • French 378 French Language Teaching Procedures and Practicum (3 hours)
  • French 431 Introduction to French Linguistics (3 hours)
  • French 491 Senior Oral Proficiency Evaluation (0 hours)

6 credit hours - two of the following three courses:

  • French 361 French Civilization from Beginning to 1715 (3 hours)
  • French 362 French Civilization from 1715 to Present (3 hours)
  • French 363 Contemporary French Civilization (3 hours)

French Elective Courses

6 credit hours from the following:

  • French 432 History of French (3 hours)
  • French 433 Studies in French Linguistics (3 hours)
  • French 445R Advanced Francophone Culture [Study Abroad only] (3 hours)

Notes:

(1) French Teaching majors must complete an approved teaching minor.

(2) Teaching majors are required to have an oral proficiency interview before enrolling in French 378. The results are recorded on the student’s transcript. Required minimum OPI rating before graduation is Advanced.

(3) To strengthen oral proficiency, the department encourages participation in a French-speaking Study Abroad Program, residence in on-campus language houses, and/or enrollment in conversation courses (211R, 311R, 411R).
