Graduate students are expected to be conversant with a broad range of French literature. In addition to works studied in courses, students are required to read all of the starred (*) works from this Reading List.
The M.A. examinations (oral and written) will evaluate your ability to discuss these works in the context of their respective centuries and the intellectual movements that they represent. The following is a list of basic terms and periods. Be prepared to give a substantial definition of each of these terms and to discuss at length connections between the terms and the authors and works associated with them. The bulk of the exam will be based on the inter-relation between these concepts and representative works.
